Choose between two cheap "Plexi"-style pedal

Post by Golden_Sonic »

Some say that the TC Electronic Dark Matter and the Electro Harmonix OD Glove are some sort of Marshall-esque Plexi distortion; I don't know if it's true or not but they sound well, at least from the demo on the Tube. The point is that I can't make up my mind on which I should pick up. Has anyone tried one of them and want to talk about it/them?

-FXs: Dunlop Cry Baby GCB-95 Wah, Boss BD-2 Blues Drive, Proco RAT, Danelectro Cool Cat Tremolo, EH Small Clone, MUZA FD900, Bespeco Volume pedal.

I still have endless love for the Box Of Rock circuit as it's the most Marshally-amp OD I've ever used, although I haven't tried those ones.

Apparently, the Glove is a clone of the Fulltone OCD, so you might be able to find one of those more easily to try it out?

Just listened to the Dark Matter, not a million miles away, especially when as it's billed a 'Distortion' but sounds way more like a heavy OD... does low gain stuff well. They've both got a 'voice' switch that seems to work in the same was as the OCD, but that 2-band EQ is definitely gonna make the TC more flexible and probably easier to match your preferences and/or setup?

The Glove has an internal switch for 9v/18v which changes the response (squish compression vs more open sounding), which could be nice for variety.

I think I'd go for the TC personally.

would recommend an Xotic Effects SL drive if you want a flexible marshall in a box style pedal, tiny little thing too. can usually get them on eBay for £60-70 used.

What about the Marshall Guv'nor or a clone? I always loved the slightly compressed sound of that pedal. Sooo smooth.

A Guv'nor 2 or a Dano Daddy-O can be had for cheap. Neither sound as good as the original (Made in England) to my ears tho.

There is also the Wilson Effects Sparkling Blue, which I have been meaninh to check out. Not cheap, but modeled after the Guv'nor.

I'm really happy with the ToneCity Golden Plexi:

And it's cheap too. $49.99 at Riff City or for those in Europe, £39.99 at Andertons
