Bloody Strap Locks

Post by euan »

I just bought some Dunlop strap locks thinking I'll just be able to retro fit them. But no, the screw needs a bigger whole to fit it in. I have three options, drill the hole, ream it or take them back and buy from Schallers that will retro fit.

Suggestions guys?

Just use the screw to enlarge the hole? Don't know how keen I am with that.

Just screw 'em in, that's what screws are supposed to do. It'll provide a much tighter and secure fit that way.

Yeah you big girl's blouse.

A two page thread on finding a guitar case and now this? You're the thorn in my side, young man.

yeah, and if they come back out, break a toothpick in half and put in the hole and screw it in again. it shouldn't give you much trouble after that.

Aye there in now. And two two straps are on order for my other non strap lock guitars.

The case thread was because I was bored in Aberdeen and all my guitars were 300 miles away in Glasgow. Plus I wanted to get something that would fit, I like being careful. Better to ask questions now that when mistakes happen.

Just wait until I turn my Tele from top loading to string through :D

Hey man I've got a simpler solution. Do you make or drink home-made beer?

If not, go out to your nearest Homebrew Supply Store (they sell stuff you need to make wine and beer and all that fun stuff) and pick yourself up two (2) Grolsch rubber stoppers.

They'll cost roughly $0.10 each and work as great strap locks. Each of my guitars have different strap pegs and these work best on my Squier, but chances are they'll work for you and I just saved you a tonne of money.

PS they look like this (the red things) - Image

Grolsch washers are cool, but I've found on the large and beefy strapbuttons I favour and plonk on all my guitars, there's not much space for the strap to swing, and the friction causes the strap button to come a little loose. Gonna glue those bitches in someday.

Grolsch caps seconded. Straps DO NOT come off with those. It's all you need.

Strap came off my telecaster yesterday after light bedroom use. The washer twisted slighty and fell off and I had to stop my guitar from plowing it's way through my pedalboard.

Nah I just screwed them in. I've had problems with not reaming holes before, tuners not fitting properly for example.

It depends on the design of the screw. Some screws have a self cutting thread...some dont.

Ha, that reminds me of this one time were the strap lock fell off my Kima Strat copy. It's heavy as shit, and i couldn't get it back in. I was damn pissed and my girlfriend just got a q-tip, broke in pieces and stuck one in. I got moted.
