NGD - Squier Paranormal Jazzmaser XII

Post by Nick »

Arrived yesterday, haven't had too much time with it yet but initial impressions are great. Fit and finish is amazing for the price, if it had Fender on the headstock I would likely be fooled into thinking this was a $800 guitar. I owned an alternate reality Fender XII for a bit and this is definitely most of the way there. Pickups might not be ideal for a 12 string but the middle position does the thing. Neck feels great and plenty of room on the fingerboard for a 12 so it doesn't feel cramped. The Oly White also looks creamier in person, hard color to photograph

I feel that - that was basically the reason I traded the Fender XII, not that I didn't use it at all, but not enough to justify having such a nice one. At $315 this is really all I could want in a 12 string, besides maybe some less aggressive pickups.

Found my scale and this weighs in at 8lbs 7oz. The XII it replaced weighed 8lb 14oz iirc, so this feels that much better. Still a chonker by my standards but I think that's the nature of a JM body shape with no cutouts for vibrato plate or rhythm circuit.

Looks beautiful

There are times when I can spend hours watching videos with Rick 12s. A Squier 12 would probably scratch that itch

I absolutely love mine.

I swapped out the pickguard for brown tort and the pickups for EPCustom Jazzmaster pickups. (stock pickups are pretty hot)

I shimmed the neck and raised the saddles. I went with Stringjoy strings.

It plays as easy as any of my six string guitars and stays in tune.

Nice! Dig the Fiesta, I almost bought one in that color when they were the only color on sale direct from Fender. When I bought mine it was just the blue and white (the Sherwood one with matching headstock is also a good look, but also sadly not on sale)

And agreed with the pickups...right now I'm just using middle position and dialing back the volume a bit which seems to be the sweet spot in stock form. If I can find a good set of weaker pickups on the cheap I'll go for them.

I got mine from EPCustom Pickups in California at $185 for the set. My Bridge pickup was 9K and my neck was 6K. The new pickups were more balanced.

I got my pickguard from an Ebay seller that does them in every color you could want.

I actually made a Youtube demo comparing the two sets of pickups for the company.

I can attach it if you want.

Oh wow, the bridge in particular loses all that harsh glare which I just thought was what an electric 12 must be like. Awesome!

If anyone's interested, Fender has the red one on sale right now for $315, and the green with matching headstock for $329.

Really wanted one of these a few months back, don’t think it’s in the budget now, though. Looks nice!
