i found this in my grandmas attic. no joke.

Painting? Routing? Set-up tips? Or just straight-up making a guitar from scratch? Post here, and post pics!

ok so, its not a guitar, but rather wood. what type of wood?
well lets see.
curly maple, flame maple, birdseye maple, walnut,
all the peices have bee air drying for over 50 years in my grandma's attic, it was stored there by another family member who was a wood worker.
you are not going to believe what im showing you.

i cleaned off a random board that appeard black(dust and dirt from 50 years of air drying)
and this is what i found.
Image
there is a big nasty piece, about 5 inches thick 8 inches wide and 20+inches tall and i couldn't tell what it was, but i brought it home and started to thickness sand it and it turns out its a giant fucking piece of flamed maple that is NICE! i thought about selling the piece to an arch top builder for a mint, but since it came from the family i will just hold onto it and use it in 30 years.

i ended up cutting a peice of flame maple that was 11 1/2 feet long, about 14 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick cuz it was warped out ina few spots.
Image
i got some really nice peices out of it tho

I love wood. Alder, Swamp ash, mahogany, Brazilian rosewood, oak... just finding some flaming maple like that is awesome! I like it when you send wood through the planer and it smells like popcorn :)

primavera smells like popcorn piss!
it stinks!
mahog always reminded me of burnt cinnamon, usually becuz i left my coffee out and the dust got in.
zircotti kinda smells like chocolate.
and zebra wood smells like straight up baby poop.
at anyrate, this is the big ass peice that i couldn't tell what it was, it looked worse that this!
Image
at that point i had run it thru a few times and burned up the paper.
but while i was at it i measured how thick it was, its a bit over 3 inches according to my trusty 6 incher.
Image
this is with the grain raised with and without flash.
its some pretty fucking wood and someday it will make a fine carved back.

i like this part becuz there is still bark on the wood, makes you remember that it was once a big tall tree.

You should definitely sell some of it. Make some awesome stuff out of it, too. But there are guys who will pay top dollar for flamed maple that size that is already dry like that. Use the money to buy less ornate but tonally as good wood and think of it as finding 10x as much wood.

i might sell some of it, buti doubt it at the same time, just becuz it has a good family history to it, and its what my parents dinner table is made out of(it was a wedding gift)
and the same wood was used to make my grandmothers dinner table about 30 years prior for her wedding present.
so perhaps i will make a dinner table, build a guitar or 2, save some, and sell the rest.
trust me, there is alot of fucking wood.

my dad made all the tables and cabinets in his house (in Tennessee) from 200-year-old barn wood. he's got a big stash of old wood like that. i should ask him to make me a guitar.

Not guitar related, but I would take some of that curly or birds-eye maple and have a good/local poll cue builder make me a stick if It were me. But you have a great find and I hope you make something of heirloom quality with it like your other family member have. Also make some cool guitars. I like the feel of curly maple necks. The slight wave in the wood appeals to me.

^this above post pisses me the fuck off.
people that make pens, and pool cues and stupid shit like that out of good wood are just straight retarded.
alot of this wood i want to go towards acoustic back and side sets. mainly becuz of the workability, aged(air dried) tonal quilities and just the straight look of it.
curly pool cue my ass, 200 dollar piece of wood that could be a bass neck thru blank, there is no way in hell i would waste it on something like that.
altho i do like a game of pool
-end rant-

I think people generally use the leftover, small pieces for shit like that. At least I hope so. PM'd! Keep what you can, of course. Storage may be a bitch.

Sorry to piss you the fuck off. But how do you figure a 1 5/8" square by 20" piece of curly is worth? "I" would do this if I got this wood from my grandparents because it would be meaningful to me; you should probably not do this - it sounds like. I am only talking about a little chunk of wood. Anyway figured maple isn't that expensive, but not that cheap either. And a dinner table would probably use up more of that guitar wood that a pool butt. Do what you want.

well, its old growth, you know what i mean?
and it would be more suited to being used for a back and side set, or something of that nature rather than a novelty item, as i see it.
im not saying that pool is a novelty, but its just a bar sport to me, guitars are a life force and the wood that they are made from is highly prized.
im sure that somewhere there is someone who is just as in love with the game of pool as i am with music and if they found this sort of thing they would think it was crazy to make a guitar out of it.
