Is 4 Phasers too many?

Post by Will »

Whadya think? Here's what I have so far:
PH-2 modded for sort of a phased trem sound (a lot like "the diamond sea")
FX20B with uni-vibe mods
Small Stone w/ 4 or 2 stage and phase/vibrato switches
'76 Univox micro-fazer

It's a lot, but phasers are the only real effect-y effects I like and they all do something different. Anyway, is it really too much? Should I spring for a Phase 90 just to round out the herd? My only other effects are a really subtle homemade fuzz and a volume pedal.

phase is cool in small doses, so i'm thinking i'm going to ditch mine in favor of a chorus.

as for four? yeah. that's too many.

Yeah, Phasers can be a bit much at times, but as far as "I AM AN EFFECT" effects go, they're pretty useful. Much more useful then a flanger, for example. IMO, they're the best modulation effects - thickening the tone without getting in the way. Plus, having four available keeps the sound from getting too boring.

Speaking of chorus, are there any good ones in addition to the Small Clone? Everyone I've tried makes my guitar sound out-of-tune in the higher registers or is just way too pronounced.

Uh.. since when? A decent flanger can chorus, produce clangy overtones, add a little vibrato or plain ol' flange. Phasers go "swoooooooosh" or "swoosh-swoosh-swoosh".

I like the "EEEEEEOOOOOYYYYNNNRRMMMMEMMEEEEEE" flange on Aneurysm on the Nirvana LTSO video. And the odd bit of Pink Floyd swoosh.

But yeah, swooshes are generally pretty lame- it's such a I HAVE JUST TURNED ON AN EFFECT sound, none too subtle.

too many to own?
No. I'd even hazard you need two more to round things out :
the Maestro early 70's Phase Shift with the three brightly colored rocker switches for the speeds. It's the creamiest warmest phase ever. (I've got one built in my main amp.)
The mid-70's Maestro Phase that's huge and controlled by two humungous wheels on the sides of the pedal that you can adjust with your feet while you play. That's genius design. It's also got a huge sweep. Like someone gently opening and closing a wah...

If you like 'em. Go ahead and collect them.

But too many to have in front of you at a gig? Yes, probably.
I doubt any but an audience comprised of musicians and audio engineers would be able to distinguish any difference.

And as for flange and phase. both can sound pretty cheesy if used in the wrong context. I use them both for very specific bits of specific songs.

But I'll take both of them over a chorus any day. I lived through the 80's. I don't need to hear a chorus pedal ever again...

What I would love though is to have a flange or phaser with an actual live/mix knob so I could use the effect but back it way the fuck off so it's a subtle coloring agent rather than the whole sound. I've never understood why they don't make them that way.

i do have a liking for certain cheesy modulation effects. I have a boss ph-2, ph-3, and a byoc phase 90 clone.
I doubt you'd be using all 4 at the same time. If you like it, keep it dude.

What's the ph-2 mod, out of curiousity? I love that "diamond sea" tone, but seeking a ludwig phase II is out of the question.
