Maybe because it probably only took him 30 minutes tops to do all those guitars.

Seriously... post pics.

Last night was the first time I strung a guitar properly. It was about the coolest thing EVAR. I had never heard about the exact proper trimming of Fender strings. If I find out some of my tuners dont's have the hole going down into them I will THOW them inna trash.

I also repaired some boll weevil holes on the back of a few headstocks only to have STOO MAC send out a how-to on that topic TODAY. I did essentially the right thing except for the doing it properly part. I used wood filler instead of drilling larger holes and putting in maple dowels. They are going under tuners that will not be taken off again in my lifetime. So if I hafta do it again I'll try dowels.

He didn't use dowels, he cut his own so that the edge grain would mathc the headstock grain. Can you imagine how long it would take to make a full set of those?!? I liked the leather punck idea though...

Get a stringwinder. I can change, tune and stretch in a set in 5 minutes flat thanks to one of dems.

I've got the 2nd one- it's got a cutter on the top, dead handy.

Everyone should own a winder- it's superquick, and helps the string wrap around the post properly, no annoying "oh, the string has just seated properly during my solo and dropped 3 tones" crap that sometimes happens if you're doing it by hand.

I never have that happen because I string my guitars well.

All I have with my kit is a pair of needle-nosed pliers/cutters which can cut strings and tighten nuts on jack sockets etc, and a phillips screwdriver.

My Tele has slot head tuners so all you do is drop the string into the hole, flatten it into the slot and apply downwards pressure so that the string winds from the base of the tuner.

its all about preference. i prefer vintage fender tuners to regular ones, but i dont have a problem stringing either. its like a knee jerk thing nowadays for me. i just do it and dont think about it too much. i like changing strings cuz its like intimate time with your guitar.

It's not like it's dramatically different, it's just a faster way of turning the tuner!

I have the top one. I wish it wasn't quite so wide, but once I get going I manage to miss the other knobs. I saw a video of a pro tech doing it, and he had the thing strung in like 3 seconds. I look forward to doing it now.

just turn all the tuners perpendicular to the headstock and use the winder to get the strings "in the ballpark". Problem solved.

I've had one of those for at least 100 years.

stringwinders go to hell. i always break or lose mine. i have had two, but hell, it's faster to just use your hands.

my thumb and forefingers on both hands hurt like hell, but now they're better. now all my guitars are sweet. i thought about selling some, but after playing them with new strings, i can't fathom the thought. i love guitars. they are pretties.
