Stay on target Rob, keep your powder dry; I've never known it be a buyer's market like this.

If I wanted another strat I’d been quids in, anything else seems to be high price and shit condition at the moment.

Although this is currently on market place for £300.
I’m not a fan of yungblud but his SG Jr doesn’t look too shabby.

Re: After some new guitar inspiration
In fact a cheeky message to see if it’s available has resulted in a reduction to £280 if I can collect it asap. Unwanted present for this guys kid.

Reading through the thread Rob I think you'll come to regret that Epi as your 40th birthday choice. There's definitely a bit of nostalgia creeping in and that feels like it will be a lower quality replacement for that white Tokai. Even if you managed to find one of your old guitars I fear there's a good chance it wouldn't quite live up the memory. Link
If the budget stretches the Eastman idea Nick suggested sounds like it would tick all the boxes.
I've always liked the idea of a birth year guitar for a birthday purchase. If you're struggling to find options on the market as is, that would probably be an unnecessary constraint but you could potentially find something in the sort of 'affordable vintage' category if you were willing to look. 85 might just about get you something from the golden era of the MIJ copies and you've also got MIA Guilds around that time, though much harder to find.
Quick Reverb search brings up a couple of interesting choices.

Very left-field for what you're describing but I bet this plays superbly.

On the semi acoustic front and a more budget friendly option - I bet this with some new pickups (and tuners if needed) would still be a bargain and punch well above its weight.

The birth year guitar is a lovely idea indeed. You've prompted me to refresh my own memory over what tends to crop up for 1993, and let's just say Sarah had better start saving up for a 93 Fujigen Tele Thinline for my 40th haha...
Re: After some new guitar inspiration
The Squier MIJ Silver series is right around that time and still very affordable. To be fair, I think the current Classic Vibe quality is on par so it's a little bit swings and roundabouts, but it does open up that birth year option. From memory my silver series Jazz Bass (bought from Pat of this forum and shipped over from Mexico) is a 92.Freddy V-C wrote: Thu May 22, 2025 3:06 pmJames wrote: Thu May 22, 2025 7:21 am I've always liked the idea of a birth year guitar for a birthday purchase. I think Tele in the spoiler is older than that, owned by forum member MattK. Might also by what you're referring to with the Fujigen. It's my absolute favourite MIJ Squier and I've never seen another.

It's actually these three that caught my eye (1, 2, 3). Last one is a bit of a wildcard, haha. Not that I'm currently in the market anyway, or even really approaching 40, and of course by the year 2033 the internet will have collapsed, we'll be in the midst of the water wars and my main priority will be capturing and barbecuing a rabbit or squirrel for dinner.

Re: After some new guitar inspiration
So the plot has thickened as efty saw me looking at guitars and started shouting at me that I shouldn’t get one now and I need to wait till my birthday before I start looking for them. There was a DPD delivery at home today, which she ran to the door to answer and made me wait in the living room and not come out until it’s safe.
Coincidence or diversion?
God knows what’s she’s bought if she’s got me a guitar or something.
I don’t know. I was awaiting for a delivery from DPD for me, but I got the day wrong and it’s tomorrow. I took the plunge on the Marshall DSL20CR combo my mate was selling.

she's went and bought you your least favourite guitar in the world but you'll have to pretend you love it and play it all the time so's not to break her little heart

Wouldn’t be the first time, though she knows I’ve been looking at a few things. She did show me a red coronet reissue and i said I’d prefer a black one or maybe a les Paul junior.Gavin wrote: Thu May 22, 2025 6:34 pm she's went and bought you your least favourite guitar in the world but you'll have to pretend you love it and play it all the time so's not to break her little heart

The suspense of it being Rob's birthday (HBDROB) and not knowing what the mystery guitar parcel was is killing me here.

Re: After some new guitar inspiration
It’s was the yungblud SG Jr she got me. She knew one of my first guitars was a cherry red Epiphone SG jr and that i had your tokai and wished I’d kept it. It’s also the only one she liked the look of from ones I’d had saved in my wish list on my phone.
It’s actually really nice, fairly weighty and feels comfy strapped on. No neck dive, neck is really comfy, not too thin. Sounds really nice, some good growl and grind that clean up well. Pots are nice and smooth. Apart from an optional sticker that has his logo on it, you’d just think it’s an inspired by SG junior.
Early days, but I’m actually really pleased. Not what I originally was thinking but now I’ve got one and played it I’m quite taken with it.

This is also pretty fucking sweet! Looks brand new and sounds really nice. I can get that Marshall crunch but at comfortable home levels.

That looks like a lovely pair. There's a lot to be said for getting gear the other half approves of.
Have you set the Marshall for maximum crunch and throw down some Back in Black on the SG yet?
