Fixing a bass tuner

Post by DGNR8 »

I stumbled into a few basses over the years. My Mustang bass has a loose tulip on the tuner. The tulip slides back in to the tuner, but doesn't stay tight, and causes a buzz/rattle. Can the calipers be pinched more tightly together to hold it, or should I try solder or Loctite? I'd hate to make a mess for the next guy. I could just buy a single or replacement set.

I have a Chinese-made J-bass which had that problem after I bumped it into the ceiling in a pub. I tried crimping it tighter, unsuccessfully. I ended up buying a replacement set, from someone on here actually. I think soldering it would discolour the finish, but it might be worth trying - dismantle the tuner so you're only heating the shaft and the tulip.
