Mango Musicmaster Build

Post by cooter »

Started this one back awhile and I finally found the time to finish it. I seem to go back to the early musicmaster / duo sonic style builds a lot.
It's a fun sleeper guitar with a pretty mean growl.

It's a Mini Strat neck, 22.75" scale.

Awesome stuff as always. You always have an original take on these classic designs and your work is so clean, it makes me jealous. I still remember the surf green one you built with a minihumbucker in the neck position.

Thanks guys!
sunshiner, that surf green mini humbucker build was years back. I had forgot about that one.

Thanks Thom!

Hey sunshiner, found pics of the mini humbucker build.

That neck was a big surprise once it was refinished. It was a mini strat neck as well.

Oh yeah, that's it. Still looks nice even in comparison with the current run of Fender Duo Sonics

The finish looks great in pics- for that rustoleum did the satin polish to gloss or did you need to use clear? Or is it more satin in person than the pics let on?

I mean that at the time when you built it Fender wasn't making anything remotely as cool, and even now with all the duo sonic reissues it still holds its own against them

The mango body has satin color and satin or matte clear. Back when I did the surf green I was using reranch color and clear but wasn't buffing it out to a glossy shine. I gave up on lacquer. It was just too time consuming.
With my attention span the down and dirty rustolem rattle can is the finish that works for me. The photos are pretty spot on.
Nice smooth finish just no glossy shine.

Nice! I've often passed up some of the prettier rustoleum colors because they're usually only available available in satin, although I know the plastic cap doesn't always do a great job of demonstrating the sheen. Looking at the photos on my computer vs the phone I can see the satin better, it looks kind of similar to those Danelectro Dead On 67 reissues from the late 00's. I might need to give it a try on my next project.

Fantastic work as always.

I think I got the body of this guitar from you a while back. I wish I still had it.
