Is it an explorer type guitar, flipped and with some bits taken off?

I think that's highly probable. Would love to figure out at least the brand though so I can come up with some options.

Congrats! Its my favorite amp for clean tones that I've used (and I have a JC-120). The drive channel really depends on what tubes you're using though, and I almost always use pedals for that.

For the absolute beginner I think BYOC is by far the easiest. They have a ton of pictures in their build documents and it's really paint by #.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I have a JC-120, and the HRD definitely has a better clean tone and takes pedals better (read: takes Fuzz pedals better)
